How do milestones work, and can one milestone be dated from another?

Milestones are the checkpoints your checklist is grouped under — for example "Subledgers Closed" or "Books Locked." Each has its own due date and shows complete automatically once every task under it is complete or skipped.

Setting them up. Owners, Admins, and Managers manage milestones in Company Settings → Milestones. Use the form to add a milestone or edit the one you selected. When you add a milestone it's added to your open close period straight away, with its date calculated — and every future period gets it automatically. If more than one period is open, you choose which ones get it.

Milestones are listed in date order. There's no manual ordering: milestones appear by their due date in the current period, earliest first, with undated milestones at the end. That order is used everywhere — settings, the checklist's By Milestone view, the hierarchy view, and the dashboard. To move a milestone in the list, change its date.

Scheduling options. A milestone can be due:

  • Period date offset — a number of business days from period start, period end, close start, or close end.
  • Calendar Date — a day of the month in the month after the period starts.
  • Milestone Offset — a number of business days before or after another milestone. This chains milestones together: set "Draft Trial Balance Ready" to +2 business days from "Subledgers Closed," and it moves whenever Subledgers Closed moves. Any task dated from either milestone moves too.
  • Manual Date — one fixed date, available only when editing a single period's milestone. A milestone from Company Settings repeats every period, so it needs a rule rather than a fixed date.

A milestone can't be dated from itself or from a milestone that already depends on it, and a milestone can't be deleted while tasks are assigned to it or while a task or another milestone is dated from it.

On the calendar, milestones show as bold teal bars above the day's tasks. The Remove task status coloring option only greys out tasks — milestones keep their color so they're always easy to spot.
